Things to do in Winton

Whether you are staying for just the night or extending your stay, there is plenty to see and do in Winton.  Make sure you check out our great restaurants, cafes and bars.  Wander the main street or go off road.  Talk to our team about the hidden secrets to explore.

We recommend the Winton Shire Council pool for a refreshing dip after a long drive, we all have our favourite fishing spot (you will be spoilt for choice), there are loads of beautiful walks and of course, don’t leave town until you have completed the dinosaur trail and visited the Dinosaur Stampede National Monument.

Waltzing Matilda Centre

The Waltzing Matilda Centre is the first museum in the world dedicated to a song.

Self guided tours allow you to discover the story of Waltzing Matilda and Winton's vast history at your own pace. The Historical Qantilda Museum forms part of your experience, honoring some of the country’s great pioneers and icons.

Other facilities of the centre include the Outback Regional Art Gallery, Accredited Visitor Information Centre, and the Tuckerbox Cafe.

Dinosaur Stampede Monument

The dinosaur trackways at Dinosaur Stampede National Monument were formed 95 million years ago when Outback Queensland was a vastly different place. In stark contrast to the arid climate of today, the landscape was characterised by a great river plain, with towering conifers and lush vegetation interspersed with sandy channels, swamps and lakes.

It was in this setting that a herd of at least 150 small two-legged dinosaurs, including carnivorous coelurosaurs and plant-eating ornithopods came to drink at the edge...

Australian Age of Dinosaurs

The Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum is home to the largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils in the world. The Museum is split between three facilities, the Fossil Preparation Laboratory, Collection Room, and the March of the Titanosaurs exhibition at Dinosaur Canyon. Future plans include the construction of Australia’s premier natural history museum.

The Museum is a non-profit organisation which draws support from across Australia.

Diamantina Heritage Truck Museum

Starting from a public meeting convened by a number of trucking enthusiasts and interested community members, Winton’s Diamantina Heritage Truck & Machinery Museum was formed in July 2004.

From that time, the volunteer members busily collected vehicles from around our district, photos and memorabilia to put into the display. With continual fundraising efforts and applying for funding for the next 3 years, Winton’s Diamantina Heritage Truck & Machinery Museum was officially opened in September 2007.

The museum adds another diverse layer to the attractions of Winton’s thriving tourism industry. Each visitor receives a history lesson on how Australia’s transport pioneers carved a road transport network. They recognise the contribution of the men and women who drove and lived with these great machines of the past.

Arno’s Wall

A modern wonder of art and architecture, Arno Grotjahn's wall contains almost every household item you can imagine and more.

The walls reach two metres high and extend for at least 70 metres. They are constructed of concrete and rock brought from Arno's opal mine at Opalton and studded with rusted lawnmower parts, boat propellers, vintage typewriters and sewing machines and even a couple of complete motorbikes.

Every part of the Wall has a story, and if you are lucky, you may run into one of the locals happy to share them.

A bit about the Architect

Arno was born in 1930 and spent his youth as a merchant seaman travelling the world. He immigrated to Australia from Germany some 30 years ago and spends his time in and around Winton opal mining.

The Musical Fence

On 20th July 2003 local and visiting artists gathered in Winton to perform in a truly unique composition

The world premier of The Musical Fence.

The Musical Fence, designed by percussionist and composer Graeme Leak, is a wire fence that can be played as a musical instrument and it is the first Permanent musical fence installation in the world.

The Musical Fence is situated behind the Diamantina Heritage Truck and Machinery Museum near the Industrial Estate. It is free to use and is there for every visitor to Winton to enjoy.

So, what are you waiting for? Grab a stick and head on down to make some music at the world’s first and only Musical Fence!
